I just cancelled my contract with my current ISP. In 6 weeks from today I won't have an Internet connection at home anymore. Well, sorta, I still have my IPhone and an UMTS USB stick (with a pay per usage contract).

This is just the next step in my ongoing self-experiment which startet 3 years ago when I got rid of my TV during a move. I want to make good use of the time I spend at home, but I'm getting distracted too easily. So in order to achive what I'm after, I'm trying to reduce the possible distractions to a minimun, or even better, get rid of them alltogether.

Over the past couple of weeks I came to notice that I don't use the Internet for much else than online gaming, staring at funny pictures and generally just killing time doing nothing usefull in particular as effetively as possible. So, I'll try to change that in the only way I know that might work for me.

In the coming weeks I'll try to focus more on making music, learning Korean and practising Tae Kwon Do. The week my ISP contract ends I'll be in Turkey for one week with ~300 others of my Tae Kwon Do group. And when I come home, I won't have Internet anymore. From my experience from last year, I know that my mindset will be tuned in a way that the “loss” will not have that much of an impact on me.

I'll still be able to read mails though as I setup my googlemail account to fetch mails from my mailserver today, so I'm not out of the world and still reachable .

I'm looking forward to see how this works out for me .

PS.: Oh and remember: I still have Internet at work .

DokuVimKi Release

Yes, you read right. I just released the latest DokuVimKi plugin for Vim. It took me almost two years of extreme procrastination and another 4 weeks of coding for this complete rewrite of the initial version.

It surpasses the old version at great length when it comes to features and functionality! However, since I've been the only user so far, some oddities or bugs probably went undiscovered .

Features:

Syntax highlighting (including code blocks, when enabled)

Filebrowser like tree to navigate the wiki

Command mode autocompletion for wiki pages!!!

Insert mode omnicompletion for wiki links and media links!!!

File upload

Revisions

Diffmode

Page and media search with support for regular expressions

and more…

I plan to do a screencast on how to use DokuVimKi, but after 6 failed attempts so far I decided to just release it for now. In the meantime DokuVimKi comes with a vim help file which describes all of it's features in detail.

You can download DokuVimKi either from my project page or from the vim script hub (please vote if you like it and have an account there ).

Please note that in order to run this plugin you'll need at least vim > 7.0 with python support, the dokuwikixmlrpc python module and a recent development snapshot of DokuWiki!

<a href="http://www.chimeric.de/_media/projects/dokuwiki/dokuvimki/screenshots/2010/dokuvimki-2010-08-06_01.png?w=800&h=568"
DokuWiki XML-RPC Python Module Released

I've been procrastinating (the term “working on it” would be an exaggeration ) over this module since July 2008. So today is teh big day I decided to finally do a official release (github page).

So, what is it good for? It's basically just a python interface to DokuWikis XML-RPC API which allows all sorts of interesting interactions with a remote wiki.

I've mainly created this module for my DokuVimKi Vim plugin (which btw is on a good way to a working release again (if you're curious about the development progress of DokuVimKi just checkout the github page).

Last not least: To all you python pros out there, this is my first python module and I hope I got most stuff right. However, if you find something to be wrong please drop me a note and I'll happily fix it .

Happy Pythoneering.

Level Up

Yesterday I had the last class of my Korean course before the summer break. So here's a short roundup about what I've learned so far.

Korean makes sense.

Really. It's a very logical language. It's not only easy to read, which I believe everyone can learn in less than one week with a little practise, the grammer and the different politness levels are very logical too. Once you grasp the system, like for example how one particular politeness level works, you can immediately adapt it to what you've learned so far.

Here's a short example for the verb 가다 (to come). 가다 is the infinitiv form, all other forms are derived the verb-stem “가” without “다” - this applies to all verbs. Here are a couple more, highliting the verb stem: 먹다, 오다, 사다, 마시다 - you probably see where this is going .

To build the different politeness leves you just append the correct post-proposition to the verb stem.

politeness level

postproposition

result

informal

-아요

가요

formal

very polite

-시 (together with the other to forms)

This logic applies to almost every other aspect of the language. There are different particles for different expressions. The one for “when” would be “면” for example. Thus 가면 roughly translates to “when I go”.

Of course I haven't learned enough to really have a conversation with someone. We haven't covered past or future yet and I still have to learn a lot of words and phrases.

However, I signed up for the next course which starts in Oktober (십월 btw. 십 means 10 and 월 means month; just another example of how logical Korean is).

I also began to write most of the stuff I've learned so far down at a separate wiki (German) - maybe it will become a useful resource for others in the future .

My Identica Wordle

Using the data I fetched using my identica backup script I created a wordle . I stripped out the ”@” mentions first otherwise @splitbrain, @foosel and @tante would have dominated the picture . Allthough I used the option to strip out common English words over at wordle, it's still pretty much meaningless, except a couple of things like “dokuwiki”. This sure could be optimized.

Backup Your Identi.ca Statuses With XMLStarlet & 8 Lines Of Bash

The title pretty much says it all. I needed a simple way to get hold of all my identi.ca statuses, so I threw a short bash script together which uses xmlstarlet (if you don't know xmlstarlet yet, I highly recommend to check it out, it's the swiss army knife for command line XML processing).

Here's the script.

identup.sh

#!/bin/bash
num=$(xmlstarlet sel --net -t -m "//user" -v "statuses_count" "http://identi.ca/api/users/show/${1}.xml")
pages=$((num / 200))
for page in $(seq 1 $((pages + 1)))
do
    xmlstarlet sel --net -t -m "//status" -v "created_at" -o " " -v "text" -n "http://identi.ca/api/statuses/user_timeline/${1}.xml?count=200&page=${page}"
    sleep 5
done

To use this script just make it executable and give your identica username as first argument. It outputs each dent preceeded by its timestamp. To save the dents just pipe them into a file or whatever fits your purposes.

$> ./identup chimeric | tee -a identica.bak.txt
Mon Jun 14 16:19:58 +0000 2010 uh oh: Farewell Microblogging http://bit.ly/9L5ZUZ
Mon Jun 14 15:42:10 +0000 2010 @splitbrain @tante achso das, das hab ich erst morgen :-P. Aber danke trotzdem!!!!!
Mon Jun 14 15:36:41 +0000 2010 okay gleich isses soweit
...

If you need more data just lookup the XML output of identi.ca and alter the second xmlstarlet call to also output the values you need.

In theory the script should also work for twitter by replacing the API URL in the script.

PS: This post will probably appear on identi.ca via twitterfeed. The way twitterfeed works and the fact that I forgot my openid login and my account there is not associated with a valid twitter account, makes it impossible for me to stop posting my blog posts to identica .

If I'm right, this blog post will appear as my 6666's notice on identica (an OpenSource microblogging site powered by StatusNet).

I joined identi.ca almost 2 years ago on 2 Jul 2008 and it has been a fun ride so far. In recent days however, I came to the conclusion that there's just no place for me anymore and that I waste too much time there.

What started as a place of people posting interesting and mostly useless information, I perceive now as a place of political missionary work, mini flamefests, missunderstandings, and useless information sprinkled with hugs and sometimes funny teasing (which I enjoy the most).

Everything changed, not only the Noise to value ratio. I changed too. What I post there nowadays, falls most of the time into the useless information/hugs/nagging/flamefests department.

So, what's the point? There is none.

Some people would just say that I follow the wrong people, but that's not the issue. I am the issue here. I just take no value out of microblogging anymore. I care about anyones political views as much as they care about me leaving work for the gym. Sometimes I take part in an argument and try to share my opinions, with 140 characters per message, which isn't enough most of the time.

Most of the time however, it's not worth the effort.

Why not unfollow the people I don't want to read anymore? Because they might be alright. Judging someone by 140character long messages would be really stoooopid. Also, some might have noticed that already, but I'm an all-or-nothing guy. That's just how I roll!

I left identi.ca for a week a couple of weeks ago and it worked out quite good. I have a place where I hang around when I feel the need to procrastinate and browse mostly useless/funny/not-so-funny/maybe-nsfw stuff over at http://soup.io. If you care about my useless stuff you might follow me there (you know where to find me) or google-reader-buddy me (I recently began to use the commenting feature there and find it quite nice).

Some of my identi.ca buddies do that already, that's why I hope they understand my move! I'll post text updates there from now on as well!

So that's it. Farewell microblogging. It was nice knowing you and all the cool people I met there! I hope I see some of you over at soup.io. or google reader.

I just came home after a 1.5 hour walk barefoot through Munich.

If there's one song on which I could walk day after day after day then it's "The Return" by Estradasphere, a brilliant song by a group of the most brilliant musicians this planet has ever seen!

Ich bin verwirrt

Achtung! Meta Bla Bla.

I Have Issues

And most of them are hosted at http://github.com , the service I use to manage my open source projects and contributions. Overall, github is a nice service. It provides everything you need to host your git repositories, including a simple issue tracker which does it for most tasks.

However, there's one thing that kept buggging me. It is not possible to browse all open issues of all your github projects at once via the webinterface1). That makes it quite difficult to get an overview, and thus setting priorities.

Of course github has an API, so hacking sth. together that does what I want should be easy and I thought maybe someone did all the work already. But searching on the intertubes didn't reveal anything except some cli tools to interact with the API and some full blown libs for various programming languages.

So, allthough the feeling of reinventing the wheel was quite strong, I quickly threw sth. together using jQuery and plain HTML.

Just head over to http://issues.chimeric.de, insert your github username and you get a list of all your open issues . Of course you can just grab the source and put the page on your own server (don't expect any wonders though, it really does just one thing: listing your open github issues).

Happy bug fixing!

1)
well, at least I didn't find one
